How to care for metal products
A conservative care guide for cleaning and protecting aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and coated metal objects.

Begin with the manufacturer's instructions
The exact alloy, coating, adhesive, seal, lubricant, electronic assembly, and food-contact requirement can change what is safe.
Use the product manual first, especially for cookware, electronics, medical or wellness devices, coated surfaces, and objects with moving parts.

Use the least aggressive method
For routine cleaning, start with a soft cloth and water, then add a small amount of mild detergent only if needed.
Dry the object completely, work with the direction of a brushed grain, and test any unfamiliar cleaner on an inconspicuous area.
Avoid abrasive pads, metal polish, chlorine bleach, strong acids or alkalis, and solvent cleaners unless the manufacturer explicitly approves them.

Aluminum and anodized aluminum
Anodized aluminum has a durable oxide surface, but aggressive abrasives and high-pH cleaners can alter its sheen or color.
Keep sharp impacts away from edges where a finish is easiest to damage, and do not assume a cleaner that is safe for bare metal is safe for colored anodizing.

Stainless steel
Stainless steel resists corrosion rather than eliminating it.
Remove salt, acidic residue, and standing moisture, particularly around joints and crevices.
Clean brushed stainless in the direction of the grain and avoid ordinary steel wool, which can leave particles that later rust.

Titanium and coated metals
Titanium is highly corrosion resistant, but polished and blasted surfaces still collect oils and scratches.
Treat painted, powder-coated, plated, and physical-vapor-deposited surfaces as coatings first and base metals second.
Once a coating is breached, refinishing should follow the manufacturer's guidance rather than a generic metal-polishing routine.

Store for the weakest component
A metal body may tolerate conditions that its battery, gasket, leather insert, bearing, adhesive, or coating cannot.
Store the complete product dry, clean, unloaded where appropriate, and away from prolonged salt, chemical, or condensation exposure.

- Can I use metal polish on every metal product?
- No. Polish can alter brushed grain, anodizing, plating, paint, protective coatings, laser markings, and fitted tolerances. Use it only when the manufacturer approves it for that exact surface.
- Why can stainless steel show rust-colored marks?
- Surface contamination, embedded ordinary-steel particles, salt exposure, crevices, and unsuitable cleaners can create staining even on stainless steel. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning guidance and avoid ordinary steel wool.
- Should scratches be removed?
- Usually only if they affect function or the finish is designed to be refinished. Cosmetic repair can create a larger mismatch in grain, gloss, or color than the original mark.
